Deputy Prime Minister

  • In India, the post of Deputy Prime Minister is not constitutional but in practical politics the Home Minister and Finance Minister have been made Deputy Prime Minister, this post is political.
  • Its function is to fulfill the responsibility of the Prime Minister in the absence).
  • From the Constitutional point of view there is no difference between the position of the Deputy Prime Minister and other Ministers of the Cabinet. The Deputy Prime Minister takes oath as a minister but in practical terms he is second only to the Prime Minister.
  • Sardar Patel was made Deputy Prime Minister by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. (Tenure 1947-1950).
